Visit a heat pump connects people curious about heat pumps with those who own them. It’s a chance to see a heat pump in action, ask questions, and hear first-hand what it’s really like to live with one, straight from those who know best.
Air source heat pumps provide efficient and reliable low-carbon home heating, but they're still uncommon in most of the UK. Most people in the UK have never seen a heat pump. For those considering one, it’s difficult to find out how it might work in their home.
Visiting a heat pump in real life and talking to people who live with one can be a highly valuable step for people who are considering switching to low-carbon heat.
Visit a heat pump is for anyone who’s interested in finding out more about heat pumps and for current heat pump owners who want to share their experience.
We want everyone in the UK to have the opportunity to visit a heat pump near them and access the support they need to make informed choices.
In 2022, we piloted a service that enabled people to see heat pumps working in real homes and learn directly from current owners. Through this live service, we hosted 45 visitors, developing a viable service model, uncovering user and host needs, and generating valuable insights and recommendations for the service’s future. Find out more about the pilot project.
We are currently working to grow and improve the service, ensuring it operates effectively across the UK. By reaching a broader range of users, we aim to gather valuable feedback, understand how the service performs in different contexts, and continuously refine it to meet the needs of as many people as possible.
This service is ran by Nesta, UK's Innovation agency for social good. Nesta’s Sustainable Future Mission is dedicated to accelerating the decarbonisation of household activities in the UK while improving productivity. Our goal is for the UK to reduce household carbon emissions by 28% from 2019 levels by 2030 and to stay on track to reach net zero by 2048.
We're working in partnership with homeowners, local authorities, community energy groups, installers, manufacturers, consumer organisations and many others across the UK to deliver this service.
Please get in touch if you'd like to explore how you can contribute, or how we can make this work better for you.
